Xylella fastidiosa subspecies: X. fastidiosa subsp piercei, subsp. nov., X. fastidiosa subsp. multiplex subsp. nov., and X. fastidiosa subsp. pauca subsp. nov
Xylella fastidiosa, a fastidious bacterium causing disease in over 100 plant species, is classified as a single species, although genetic studies support multiple taxons. To determine the taxonomic relatedness among strains of X. fastidiosa, we conducted DNA-DNA relatedness assays and sequenced the 16S–23S intergenic spacer (ITS) region using 26 strains from 10 hosts. Under stringent conditions...

The draft genome sequence of Xylella fastidiosa subsp. multiplex strain Griffin-1, isolated from a red oak tree (Quercus rubra) in Georgia, is reported here. The bacterium has a genome size of 2,387,314 bp, with a G+C content of 51.7%. The Griffin-1 strain genome contains 2,903 predicted open reading frames and 50 RNA genes.
متن کاملNatural Competence Rates Are Variable Among Xylella fastidiosa Strains and Homologous Recombination Occurs In Vitro Between Subspecies fastidiosa and multiplex.
Xylella fastidiosa, an etiological agent of emerging crop diseases around the world, is naturally competent for the uptake of DNA from the environment that is incorporated into its genome by homologous recombination. Homologous recombination between subspecies of X. fastidiosa was inferred by in silico studies and was hypothesized to cause disease emergence. However, no experimental data are av...
متن کاملTHE ROLE OF LIPOPOLYSACCHARIDES IN VIRULENCE, BIOFILM FORMATION, AND HOST SPECIFICITY OF XYLELLA FASTIDIOSA Principal Investigator:
This project focuses on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) component of the outer membrane of Xylella fastidiosa (Xf). In particular, we are investigating if the O-antigen portion of this molecule contributes to Xf surface attachment and biofilm formation. More importantly, by targeting genes involved in O-antigen biosynthesis, we will determine if LPS is an important virulence factor for Xf infectio...

This project aims to further elucidate the molecular mechanisms Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) employs during the infection of its host. We are focusing on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) component of the outer membrane of Xf. LPS contains a conserved lipid A and core portion and a variable O-antigen portion. In particular, we are examining the variable portion of the LPS molecule, the O-antigen. O-antig...
